    Free bottles Melbourne (Chadstone area)

I have some bottles I've been hording that are surplus to my needs. There's a range of sizes, mostly quite clean – stored in cardboard boxes – but they will need another decent rinse/clean, plus sanitise of course, before being filled with amber nectar of the gods. Free to good, loving home...

Jao The Ultimate Beginners Mead Recipe

I believe the use of bread yeast is intended to leave the mead sweet, somewhere between 1.020 and 1.040, from a quick look around the web. Most wine yeast will have a higher alcohol tolerance and will ferment the honey out more fully, leaving the mead more on the dry side. If you follow this...

    2014 Vic Christmas Case Swap

Hi all, apologies but I am regrettably pulling out. I was down for a cube and to supply chips+dips. Hopefully you have enough notice to adjust the recipe without too much inconvenience. I have removed myself from lists. 1. Midnight Brew - Sons of Zeus IPA (Red X, Apollo, Bravo) 2. Grainer -...

    Whisky tasting Melbourne TODAY!

True. I also get to do her tastings too! In seriousness though, I will have a spare ticket for the 2:10 session and will take charitable donations if anyone wants the ticket at a discount.

    Whisky tasting Melbourne TODAY!

The Immigration Museum on Flinders St is doing some Scottish exhibition and are running a Whisky tasting workshop. 12:40pm or 2:10pm start $15 'festival' entry + $23 tasting workshop. Me and the Mrs had tickets (to 2:10pm start) but we're sick. I may still go if I can convince her I'm feeling...

Jao The Ultimate Beginners Mead Recipe

This is what I've been doing, but only because I racked to another demi/carboy which would was full of air. While it's in the primary vessel there should be a good blanket of CO2 over it and I wouldn't think there was a need to worry. That opens up debate about if/when to rack and the effect...

Jao The Ultimate Beginners Mead Recipe

As long as the blue lid didn't leak too much I think you'll be fine. Having said that, I personally would go with a double or triple layer of glad wrap and the rubber band, or maybe even alfoil. Either way I don't think you have big worries.

    2014 Vic Christmas Case Swap

I've a vego, so don't count me as a number when looking at meat. I'll bring myself some veg mains but happy to chip in for salads and sundries. I did the hummus and french onion dips last time, happy to do whip those up again. I think I have a salsa recipe somewhere. (Will bring suitable...

No chill questions - Cube not filled

Unrelated to your question, but I've seen people advise against putting a hot cube straight into the fridge, as the heat from the cube quickly warms up the air and it just becomes a sauna, with the fridge's insulated walls keeping more heat in than the fridge's cooling can offset efficiently...

    Moonlight Meadary in melb

I didn't buy that 100%. The sugar portion of honey will ferment out, but there are subtle flavour compounds which won't, since they're not sugars. Within the BJCP style of 'mead' there are substyles for dry, semi-sweet, and sweet, so it must be possible to make a nice-tasting dry mead...

    Moonlight Meadary in melb

The Australian distributor, Dan from Calibre Beer was there last night. If you contact him I'm sure he'll tell you where you can find them (if whether they are available in Melbourne, he's Brissy based). http://www.calibrebeer.com/contact-calibre.html I agree, while they were all delicious...

    Making a mid strength... thoughts?

Mid-strength is next on my list too. I'm using about 200g of carapils as well as some crystal, as this will lend extra body without the sweetness. I'm actually using 240g of crystal, with the thought that moderately high bitterness will keep it all in balance. Worth checking out the tried and...
